God promised Israel the land of Canaan as an everlasting (age-lasting) inheritance.

Joshua 14:9 (ESV)
9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’

This was a great promise.  The land would flow with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 27:3).  The Jews would have a country to call their own as long as they were faithful, and God did indeed give them the land as an inheritance.

Joshua 21:43 (NASB)
43 So the Lord gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and lived in it.

Under the Covenant of Christ, we have a far better inheritance.  Our inheritance is the best one ever given.  Peter described it for us.

1 Peter 1:3-4 (ESV)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,

Peter uses three terms in ver. 4 to describe our inheritance.  It is incorruptible, i.e., it is not liable to corruption or decay.  It is undefiled, i.e., it is not susceptible to contamination.   And it fades not away, i.e., its beauty and splendor are perpetual.

How different is this inheritance from that of an earthly inheritance?  What can you inherit in this world that does not soon lose its attractiveness and its appeal?  In fact, what can you inherit in this world that does not at some point perish altogether?  Can you think of anything?  Even the land given to Israel in fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant was temporary, seeing that this earth, and everything in it, including the land of Canaan, will be burned up (2 Peter 3:10).

And it is not just the nature of our inheritance that is better.  Our possession of it is far greater as well.  The Jews took possession of the land and then, due to their unfaithfulness, lost it.  Once we take possession of our inheritance, we will never be able to lose it.  Heaven will be our eternal home, and all threats of losing it will have been removed.  The devil will no longer be able to tempt or trick us because he will be in the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10).

Our only responsibility to obtain our inheritance is to be faithful to our God (Revelation 2:10).  If we do that, we shall inherit an eternal home in heaven that can never be lost.    What a great inheritance we have.  Far better than anything that has gone before.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
