How are you walking?  The Bible has a lot to say about how we walk.  We have a good example of how that should be in Genesis 5.

Genesis 5:22-24 (ESV)
22  Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23  Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24  Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

Do you want to know about Enoch’s godliness?  The Bible says he walked with God.  As the old preacher said, “’nough said.”  When you think about it, saying that Enoch walked with God says it all.  It necessarily implies that Enoch lived a morally upright life because God will not walk with any other kind of person (1 John 1:5-7).  Are you walking with God?  You can only say yes to that question if your walk mirrors the walk of Enoch.

  • Enoch’s Walk with God Was Consistent.

Walking with God was not a short journey for Enoch.  He walked with God for over 300 years.  If we want to walk as Enoch did, ours must be a daily journey that is characterized by longevity.  We do not walk with God one day and with the devil the next.  We walk with God every day.  That means that every day we live morally upright lives that are consistent with the principles of the gospel.  Being in fellowship with God, we walk in the light as He is in the light (1 John 1:7), for what fellowship has light with darkness (2 Corinthians 6:14)?

  • Enoch’s Walk with God Was Characterized by Faith.

Hebrews 11:5 (ESV)
5  By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.

Enoch was taken by God because he was a man of great faith.  His translation into heaven was the peak of his faith.  Think about it.  The record does not say that he was taken up because of his faith; even though that is true, it says by faith he was taken up.  Since faith comes by hearing the Word of God, God must have told Enoch what He was about to do, and he believed it.  What great faith.  Had Enoch ever seen anybody translated into heaven?  No!  Had Enoch ever heard of anyone being translated into heaven?  Again, the answer is probably no.  He believed that God would do what He said He would do because He had unwavering faith in Him, and that was the kind of faith he walked with for over 300 years.  No wonder we are told that he was commended as having pleased God.  If we, too, are walking with God, we trust Him as Enoch did, believing His Word no matter how impossible it may seem.

  • Enoch’s Walk with God Was Visible.

Enoch was commended because people took notice of how he lived.  He allowed his light to shine because he was not ashamed of the God with whom He walked.  He openly condemned those who refused to live the godly life that God expected.  In the third passage that refers to Enoch, we are told that he preached against ungodliness (Jude 1:14-15).  A real part of walking with God is, not only cleaving to what is good as we live morally upright lives, but also abhorring what is evil (Romans 12:9).  This is the way Enoch walked.  Do you walk the same way?

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
