Confessing that Jesus is the Son of God is a part of God’s plan of salvation.  Before the Ethiopian eunuch could be baptized into Christ, he first had to make this good confession.

Acts 8:36-38 (NKJV)
36  Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37  Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38  So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.

Paul acknowledged the importance of this confession when he wrote to the brethren in Rome.

Romans 10:8-10 (NKJV)
8  But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9  that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

The phrase “Son of God” does not denote that Jesus derived His existence from the Father, for Jesus was with God in the beginning, long before His incarnation (Jn. 1:1-3; Col. 1:16-18).  The phrase “Son of God” points to the equality that Jesus has with the Father.

John 5:17-18 (NKJV)
17  But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” 18  Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

Why did the Jews think that Jesus made Himself equal to God just by referring to Him as His Father?  It was because such a statement assumes a likeness of being.

If I told you that I had a son, what kind of being would you conclude that he was?  Would you think he was a horse?  No, of course not.  You would know that he was a human being because that is what I am.  Just the same, every time Jesus referred to God as His Father, He was affirming His deity.  The Jews knew this, and that is why they sought to kill Him even more.

What do we learn from this?  We learn that confessing that Jesus is the Son of God is (if we really believe it) an acknowledgment of His deity as well.  There are many in the religious world (Jehovah’s Witnesses at the top of the list) who claim to believe in Jesus but deny that He is God.  That is like saying you believe my son is really my son, but then deny that he is human.  It is an illogical conclusion.

The deity of Christ should never be called into question.  When the Jews accused Jesus of claiming to be God in the passage above, did you notice that Jesus never denied it?  Why not?  It was because they were right.

The Bible is filled with passages that affirm that Jesus is God (John 1:1; Acts 20:28; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 1:8).  If you do not believe this great truth, you really do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that means that you really do not believe in Jesus at all.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
