While it is true that we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26), it is not true that we are just alike.  This is a mistake that many make, that is, thinking that God is like man.

Psalm 50:21 (ESV)
21  These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.

This is a deception that has destroyed many souls.  Let’s notice a few areas where this mistake has been made.

  • Some think they can hide from God

Since man can sometimes hide from other men, some mistakenly think they can hide from God as well.  That can be a fatal mistake.  We cannot escape the presence of God (Psalm 139:1-12).  You can escape the presence of the preacher.  You can conceal your conduct from the congregation.  You may hide your performance from the pastors, but you cannot evade the presence of God because He sees, hears, and knows everything (Heb. 4:13).

When it comes to God, we better watch what we do, what we say, and even what we think because nothing about us escapes His notice.  EVER!  God is not like man!  You cannot talk behind His back because His eyes are always on you.  You cannot tiptoe away from God into another room because He fills every room in the house with His presence.  As the old saying goes, you can run, but you can’t hide.

  • Some think that God takes sin lightly

Our society tends to shrug off sin because it feels as if it is not that bad.  Many people seem to think that because man tolerates sin, God will as well.  Sins, such as sexual immorality, gambling, cursing, social drinking, lying, etc., have been acceptable in society for years.  Sadly,    some in the church have even begun to think some of these sins are not all that bad and that God will tolerate them.  God, however, is not like man.  No matter how popular a particular sin might become, and how often it is committed, it is still an abomination to God.

God will never have anything to do with sin, for it is contrary to His nature (Isaiah 59:2; 1 John 1:5; Psalm 5:4-5).  Man may tolerate sin, thinking that it is not all that bad; but do not make the mistake of thinking that God is like man.  He is not!  He hates sin and will someday punish it all.

  • Some think there are many ways to heaven

There are many different religions in the world.  Even within so-called Christendom, there are many different churches.  Man thinks that one is as good as the other; thus, he thinks God feels the same way.  He doesn’t!  God is not like man.  There is only one true religion.  There is only one way to be saved and Jesus is that way (John 14:6).  To accept Jesus, a person must obey the gospel (Romans 1:16).  Any religious group that is not established upon Jesus and His Word will be found wanting in the last day (Matthew 15:13-14; Psalm 127;1).  Man may think that all churches are right, but God is not like man!  He will only save those who are in His Son.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
