Deuteronomy 8:1 (ESV)
1  “The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers.

God promised Abraham that He would give to His descendants a land (Genesis 12:7).  That land, as we all know, was the land of Canaan, and in Deuteronomy 8, the Israelites are on the verge of taking possession of it just as God promised them.

Deuteronomy 8:7-8 (ESV)
7  For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, 8  a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey,

We should always remember that God always keeps His promises.  From the time that He promised Abraham the land, until the time the first Jew stepped foot on that land, the fulfillment of the promise was inevitable because God cannot lie (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18).  Remembering that God keeps His promises is comforting for at least two reasons.

First, it reminds us that we can always trust God.  This will make us much stronger Christians and faithful children of God.  If we trust God completely, we will always rely on and trust in His Word, helping us to live by it consistently, and, therefore, be blessed by Him.

Psalm 40:4 (ESV)
4  Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!

Another reason we are comforted by the realization that God keeps His promises, is that they are always great.

2 Peter 1:3-4 (ESV)
3  His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4  by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises

The greatest promise of all is the salvation of our souls, ending with a home in heaven with God. All of the spiritual blessings that we have in Christ, and experience along the journey of our Christianity, is a part of the precious promises of God.  Paul speaks of the unfathomable nature of these great promises.

1 Corinthians 2:9 (ESV)
9  But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—

What God has promised is fellowship with Him right now (1 John 1:7), and, at the appointed time, in a blissful heaven (John 14:1-3; Revelation 21:3-4).

Let us always remember the faithfulness of God, and trust in His promises every day.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
