It is amazing how invincible people think they are.  This comes to my mind whenever I see a motorcyclist without a helmet.  One accident can mean instant death, seeing how he has left the most important part of his body unprotected.  Sure, motorcycle helmets might be an annoyance, but they save lives.  How foolish it is for someone to think that fatal accidents only happen to others.

Let’s not make the same mistake by going through life with our heads unprotected.  When it comes to the devil’s attacks against us, we are far from invincible.  The truth is, without arming ourselves properly, we will inevitably become spiritual casualties in this warfare in which we are engaged.  One of the most important parts of our armor is the helmet of salvation.

Ephesians 6:17 (ESV)
17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

A part of putting this helmet on is filling our minds with thoughts of salvation.  Not only is thinking about heaven comforting, but it is also greatly beneficial.  The more we think about our salvation and the various aspects of it, the more we will do what it takes to achieve it.

1 John 3:2-3 (ESV)
2  Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3  And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

John is referring here to the “what” of our hope, that is, the glorified bodies that we will attain in the life to come.  The Bible refers to this often.  Paul said, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body…” (Philippians 3:20-21).

What great hope we have!  Someday we will put off this earthly tabernacle and be clothed with our house from heaven (2 Corinthians 5:1-4).  John said that the one who has this hope purifies himself.  Why?  Because he desperately wants to achieve this salvation.  It is from this standpoint that Paul said that hope saves us (Romans 8:24) and why the Hebrews writer calls hope an anchor.

Hebrews 6:19 (ESV)
19  We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain,

The inner place behind the curtain is heaven.  That is the “where”  of our hope.  This hope is an anchor because it stops us from drifting away from God and losing our salvation.  It keeps us steadfast (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Put on the helmet of salvation every day.  Think about heaven.  Think about your future glorified body, and let this hope serve as an anchor that helps you make it through the bad times and remain faithful during the good times.  Secure your mind with thoughts of the eternal life that your heavenly Father has promised you.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
