Doing good involves doing what is right, fair, and in the best interest of others.  It includes both words and deeds.

1 Thessalonians 5:14-15 (ESV)
14  And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 15  See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

To whom should we do good?  Paul tells us to everybody, but it begins with one another.  It reminds me of another passage that instructs us to do good.

Galatians 6:10 (ESV)
10  So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

To do good is to follow in the steps of our Lord.

Acts 10:37-38 (ESV)
37  You yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: 38  how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

If we want to be like Jesus, doing good is not optional.  The good that Jesus did involved helping others.  We may not be able to duplicate the miraculous deeds our Lord did, but we can help one another.  This might involve teaching and admonishing.  In the context of instructing the saints at Thessalonica to do good, Paul told them to “admonish the idle” (1 Thessalonians 5:14).  To admonish means “to put in mind or warn” (Vine).  Whatever the sin we see a brother or sister doing, we do good when we warn them about it, admonishing them to do better.  James tells us to bring back a wandering sinner is to save his soul from death (James 5:20).  I would call that doing good.

We do good by sharing what we have with the less fortunate.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 (ESV)
17  As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18  They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19  thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

Titus 3:14 (ESV)
14  And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.

Notice the warning not to be unfruitful.  The fruit of the Christian is doing good.  It might involve helping the needy, admonishing the sinner, encouraging the weak, or just being kind toward one another, treating each other fairly and with respect and love.  Remember, the body of Christ is made up of many different kinds of people with different backgrounds, personalities, and characteristics.  How do we all get along consistently?  Determining to be good to each other is a great start.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things
