Knowing God is critical to our salvation.  When Jesus prayed to the Father, He put it like this:

John 17:3 (ESV)
3  And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

Knowing God is eternal life because it leads to obedience to Him.  Listen to what John says about this:

1 John 2:3-4 (ESV)
3  And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4  Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,

With these things in mind, let us spend the week thinking about the God we know before we wind down each night.

The God we know is our Creator.  When Paul traveled to Athens, he preached to the Athenians amid the Areopagus.  On his way there, he observed an altar with the inscription that said, “To the unknown god.”  He used that as a starting point to his sermon, telling them, “What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you” (Acts 17:23).  Paul could have gone in several directions in proclaiming God to the Athenians, but he chose to focus on God as the Creator.

Acts 17:24 (ESV)
24  The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,

In Genesis 1 the Bible simply says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”  What a great God we serve.  He simply spoke the universe into existence.  The Psalmist said, “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host” (Psalm 33:6).  Only God has this kind of power.  He created ex nihilo, that is, He created something out of nothing.

Man can create things that delight the eyes and mesmerize the mind; he can take raw material and make houses to live in, planes to help him get to places, and highways on which to travel, but only God can create something out of nothing.  His marvelous creation proves His existence and leaves man without excuse for denying Him.

Romans 1:20 (ESV)
20  For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

God’s creation tells us, not only that He is real, but that He is great.  God is almighty, all-powerful, unrivaled, and unsurpassed, and He deserves our respect and reverence.

Do you know God?  If you really do, you stand in awe of His magnificence.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
