Christianity is not for lazy people.  There is much work to be done in the body of Christ.  Too many who obey the gospel view baptism as the endgame.  The truth, however, is that baptism marks the beginning of the race, not the end.  Baptism puts us into Christ where we can start living for Him, seeing that our sins have now been washed away by the blood of Christ (Acts 22:16), and we have become new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17).

In Christ, we have a new beginning.  The question is, are we taking advantage of it by being engaged in the work of the Lord?  One thing that the church has always struggled with is having enough workers.  Jesus once said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Luke 10:2).

Are you an active laborer in the vineyard of the Lord?  Are you an active member of the local church to which you have joined yourself?  The universal church will be okay regardless of what you or I do, but our local churches need our help.  For a local church to reach its full potential, or anywhere near it, it needs to have most of its members being active in the work of the Lord.  Concerning the body of Christ, which is the church, Paul wrote the following:

Ephesians 4:16 (KJV)
16  From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

In a healthy body, every joint is supplying, and every part is working.  We are all joints and parts of the body of Christ, but what are we supplying?  That is the question that we should ask ourselves from time to time.  We must all strive to be acting, functioning members of the local church to which we belong.  Do not be a pew warmer.  Do not be one of those members who is sitting idly by while everyone around you is working.  If you want to be sure about your salvation, stay busy in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:58 (ESV)
58  Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

The word abounding means doing something in abundance.  It literally means “enough to spare” (Strong).  The work of the Lord is not something we should do sparingly.  We should be moved to do the work that God has given to us to do, knowing all that God has done, and continues to do, for us.  When we have that attitude, we will take pleasure in serving God rather than viewing it as a burden.

Jesus once said, “I must work the works of Him who sent me, while it is day: the night comes when no man can work” (John 9:4).

Let us take advantage of the time that we have.  Time does not last forever.  James said that it appears for just a little while and then vanishes (James 4:14).  We do not know when death will overtake us, nor when the Lord will return.  This is why Jesus warned us to watch (Matthew 25:1-13).  He wants us to be ready when He returns.  The only way we will be ready is if He finds us active in His work when comes.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
