That life is full of trouble is not simply a pessimistic viewpoint taken by those with a melancholic mentality, but something confirmed by the Word of God.

Job 14:1 (ESV)
1  “Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble.

The question is how do we handle the trouble that invades our lives?  Some arrogantly believe that they can handle any difficulty in life by themselves, so they never turn to any outside source for help.  Those who trust too much in themselves may gain victories in life here and there, but they often endure needless pain when they fail, and sometimes their failures are catastrophic.

Proverbs 16:18 (ESV)
18  Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Others realize that they need help when trouble overtakes them, but they make the mistake of turning to the wrong source for help.  One area where we find this happening is in troubled marriages.  Some turn to marriage gurus who have become famous by writing witty lines in books that sell by the millions.  The problem is their philosophies do not work, demonstrated by the fact that many of them have been divorced a multitude of times.

As Christians, the first one we should turn to in times of need is our heavenly Father.

Psalm 9:9-10 (ESV)
9  The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. 10  And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.

To know the name of God is to realize that He is the self-existing, eternal One Who created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1; Psalm 90:1-2), and the only true and living God.  The result of such realization should be to trust in Him, especially in times of trouble.

David’s confidence in God was strengthened by his deliverance from His enemies.  He wrote, “When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before your presence…the very memory of them has perished” (vers. 3, 6).  While David’s troubles came from the hands of men, God delivers His people from all kinds of trouble, but we must turn to Him for help.

Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)
16  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Drawing near to God was a frequent exhortation of the Hebrews writer (Hebrews 7:19, 25).  James exhorted us to do so as well (James 4:8).  Who do you draw near to in times of trouble?

There is nothing wrong with reading books or consulting with earthly acquaintances when you run into the difficulties of life, but that should be after you boldly draw near to God.  When you are in trouble, turn first to your Creator.  He should be our stronghold in times of trouble.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
