We find this question being asked in Malachi 3:8.  The answer to the question, both then and now, is yes.  Back then the people of God were robbing Him by not paying their tithes properly.  How might we rob God today?

We know, or at least we should know, that tithing was an Old Testament command and not applicable to us today.  That does not mean, however, that we are not commanded to give.  We are.

1 Corinthians 16:2 (ESV)
2  On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.

God’s law on giving has obviously changed, but that does not mean that we are not obligated to give.  1 Corinthians 16:2 is an apostolic command.  Every Christian who prospers, must give accordingly since God is the giver of all good gifts (James 1:17).

Every Lord’s Day some saints fail to give as they have prospered.  Too many in the church think they can ignore certain commandments from God with impunity, but it is not so.  If you are not giving to God on the first day of the week, you are robbing God.  As the Midas commercial used to say, “You can pay now, or you can pay later.”  To pay now will simply cost you a portion of what you have been blessed with by God.  To pay later will cost you your soul.  Don’t make the mistake of robbing God by failing to give on the first day of the week.

Giving financially is not the only way that we can give to God.  There are things other than money that God expects us to give.  For example, God expects us to give some of our time to Him.

Colossians 4:5 (ESV)
5  Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.

Making the best use of our time surely includes doing the will of God.  We are giving God our time when we do things such as attending worship services, studying our Bibles, and praying to Him.  We give our time to God when we visit the sick, take the time to send cards to members who need encouragement, attend gospel meetings of congregations other than our own, etc.  Basically, we are giving our time to God whenever we engage in spiritual activities that honor Him and gives Him glory.

How much time do you think you give God every week?  Sadly, some think that attending worship services three or four times a week is too much time spent on God.  Rest assured, the person who thinks like that is certain to be robbing God of time.  Don’t be one of them.

There are many other things that we can give God, but it all begins with giving God ourselves.  The churches of Macedonia serve as an example of this.  Paul said of them, “…they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us”  (2 Corinthians 8:5).  Have you given yourself to the Lord?  If you have, I am sure that the other things come naturally.  If you have not, that is the best place to start giving to God.

There is no doubt that we can rob God.  The question is, are we in any way doing so?

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
