1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)
13  No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

The message from 1 Corinthians 10 is loud and clear.  A Christian can fall from grace.  The man-devised doctrine of Calvinism denies this biblical truth that is stated over and over again, but the Bible is clear about it.  The conclusion of the first 11 verses of the chapter is inescapable.  Nevertheless, just in case the saints at Corinth allowed their pride to close their eyes to the truth, Paul states it more specifically in ver. 12.

1 Corinthians 10:12 (ESV)
12  Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.

Never allow pride to cause you to think that you are too strong to fall.  We all need to take heed.  Does this mean that we have to constantly live in fear that we are going to someday lose our salvation?  No.  God has given us plenty of protection against the assaults of Satan.  Just because we can fall does not mean that we have to fall.  The truth is, we can live the rest of our lives without ever falling away from God, and we should.  God has equipped us with the power to do so.

Jude 1:24 (ESV)
24  Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy,

Is this not an encouraging truth?  The devil has other plans for us though.  He is going to do everything he can to cause us to stumble.  Every opportunity he has to tempt us, he is going to try to take advantage of it.  Here is where the truth of 1 Corinthians 10:13 can inspire us.  While we can fall, there is never an excuse to do so because the devil does not have the power to tempt us beyond our ability to withstand.

With every temptation the devil throws at us, there is a divine way of escape.  This is guaranteed by God.  This way of escape may come in the form of prayer (Matthew 26:41).  It may come by turning to brethren for help (1 Thessalonians 5:11), or by some other means, but we know that the way of escape will be present with every temptation we ever experience.  It is up to us, to find that way of escape and take it.

We have security in Christ.  The power of Satan is limited.  He can tempt us, but he cannot force us to act.  He is counting on us being too weak to resist him.  As soon as we take the way of escape that God provides for us, Satan will, at least temporarily, leave us alone.

James 4:7 (ESV)
7  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Be strong!  With the help of God, we can overcome the devil.  Take heart in the fact that we are being guarded by the power of God (1 Peter 1:5).  If we take advantage of it, we will never fall.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
